What is solar energy? The earth receives more energy from the sun in just one hour than the world uses in a whole year. Plants use that energy to make food through photosynthesis, we can use that energy to make electricity using solar electric panels (photovoltaics). Solar energy is clean, renewable energy because it does not give off any pollution and it doesn't use fossil fuel resources. Other kinds of clean, renewable energy are windpower, sustainable biomass, small hydro, and geothermal. To learn about how photovoltaics turn sunlight into electricity, please visit the Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy webpage on photovoltaics. |
