Cornell University Solar Energy Fund
Thanks to the solar fund, the Day Hall Solar Project is up and running with more projects on their way!
Where does the fund go?
The Solar Energy Fund is spent on an assortment of projects, deemed appropriate by the allocation team, across the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, NY.

Completed Projects

Day Hall;
Approximately 15kW of solar panels have been installed on the southernmost roof of Day Hall. The section of roof where the panels are placed was re-roofed at the end of the summer in 2006 to allow for the PV installation. While it is not visible from the ground, those looking west from the upper floors of the Statler will be able to see the panels as will anyone looking out from the executive board room in Day Hall or East from the top floor of Sage Hall.

The electricity produced by this installation will be more than enough to offset 100% of the electricity used to light the clocktower. A plaque will be placed at the base of the clocktower about the installation and a kiosk is being placed in the lobby of Day Hall so that visitors may see how the installation is performing. There will also be a web page set up soon where anyone can go to see the installation's performance.

For photos of the project taken during installation, visit this web album.

Current and Future Projects

The Cornell Store;
Construction is currently underway to put just over 2kW of solar panels over the loading dock on the south side of The Cornell Store. A custom support structure was built by the Cornell sheet metal shop to mount these panels to the concrete wall. If you walk between Sage Hall and Barnes Hall, you'll be able to see the panels shortly. There will be displays in the Store about the panels and their performance. The same web page showing the Day Hall performance will also show the performance of this installation.

Shoals Marine Lab;
Planning is underway for a solar electric system to be installed at the Shoals Marine Lab on Appledore Island off the coast of southern Maine. When the project is complete, one of the dormitories will get all of its electricity from the solar panels. This project will be using panels left over from the Day Hall and Cornell Store installations and is currently seeking funding for the remaining equipment that will be purchased this spring so that the Summer Engineering Sustainability interns will be able to participate in the installation at the beginning of the summer.

COE Hoffman Challenge Course;
Cornell Outdoor Education has been exploring the idea of a solar installation at their Hoffman Challenge Course for three years. The course is located four miles east of campus on Mt. Pleasant and currently has no electricity. Solar panels would allow them to have lights for progamming at night as well as to run a projector for powerpoint presentations during their team building programs. The Office of the President, under Hunter Rawlings, gave a seed gift of $1,000 towards this effort in May of 2003. It may be possible to use any remaining panels left over after the Shoals installation is complete, but further funding will be needed to purchase the associated equipment to complete the system.
